Getting your playlist onto the Apple TV

Install Kanalo on the Apple TV from the App Store (it is the same universal app). Under Add playlist choose 'From iPhone': the TV shows a QR code. Point the camera of an iPhone that has Kanalo installed at it, tap the banner, and tick the playlists you want to send. They arrive over your own Wi-Fi network, encrypted with a key that only exists in that QR code. You can also type an M3U URL or Xtream login on the TV, or let iCloud bring over playlists you already use on your iPhone.

What is different on the big screen

The Apple TV app is built for a remote, not a touchscreen. The top bar switches between Home, Channels, Movies, Series, Guide and Search; the guide uses a channel column and a programme column instead of a scrolling timeline; and the player keeps the controls out of the way until you press the remote. Chromecast, offline downloads and EPG reminders are not available on tvOS — those stay iPhone and iPad features.

Play on Apple TV from your iPhone

Once an Apple TV is paired, the ⋯ menu of a film or series and the streaming panel in the player on your iPhone show 'Play on Apple TV'. The TV plays the stream itself, straight from your provider, and continues where you were. This is not AirPlay: nothing is mirrored and the iPhone does not need to stay on. If the TV is not on the same network, Kanalo can relay the command through its server after you give permission — the content stays encrypted on your devices PRO.

Free and Pro on Apple TV

The free app is complete for watching: live TV, the guide, movies, series, favourites and continue watching, with no ads. Pro adds Play on Apple TV, unlimited playlist refreshes and Family Sharing, and is shared with your iPhone and iPad through the same Apple ID — €0.99 a month, €9.99 a year or €39.99 once.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Apple TV app a separate purchase? +

No. Kanalo is one universal app: the download is free on Apple TV, and a Pro purchase made on your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV works on all three with the same Apple ID.

Which Apple TV models are supported? +

Any Apple TV that runs tvOS 17 or later: Apple TV 4K (all generations) and Apple TV HD.

Do I have to type my playlist URL on the TV? +

No. Choose 'From iPhone' on the Apple TV and scan the QR code with your iPhone; Kanalo sends the playlists you tick, Xtream logins included. Typing on the TV works too if you prefer.

Does the EPG guide work on Apple TV? +

Yes. If your playlist ships an XMLTV URL, the guide shows now and next per channel and a full programme column, free. Catch-up from the guide works with providers that support it.

Can I use AirPlay instead? +

Yes. On iPhone and iPad, AirPlay to your Apple TV is a Pro feature and works for live TV, movies and series. With the native tvOS app you no longer need it: the Apple TV plays the stream itself, which is easier on your Wi-Fi and your battery.

Does Chromecast work on Apple TV? +

No. Google offers no Chromecast SDK for tvOS. Chromecast stays available on iPhone and iPad PRO.

Do favourites and watch progress sync between iPhone and Apple TV? +

Yes, through iCloud with the same Apple ID — playlists, favourites and playback position. Xtream passwords are sent over with the QR transfer rather than through iCloud.
